Figure+Ground Project

Project type

Graphic Design

In this project, students explored dimension, form, and pattern, focusing mainly on figure ground. They had the challenge to use 8×8 inch squares of Bristol paper and black construction paper. They used the Bristol as a palette, and the black construction paper was cut into strips, which were applied to the white surface, creating many different compositions. Students had an assigned amount of squares produced for all of the specific areas. The amount they chose to reflect each area needed to be a minimum of 7 squares in each area. The three areas reflected dimension, form, and pattern. The final composition was either arranged from all of the squares in a particular fashion, with all of them correlating with one another, or they could all be variations of the same instance. Students needed to continue looking at ideas of figure/ground and line, as they went through each area, throughout the entire project.
