A project during my internship at HOK: planning and constructing a new college campus in Saudi Arabia. The department focused on creating the KAUST environment, including way-finding systems, signage, and campus street furniture. I participated in designing the signage and patterns for the exterior graphic systems. Sign design is a key component of the way-finding systems. The sign content reflects the brand and identity, adhering to guidelines for fonts, colors, logo usage, and brand attributes. The display systems (sign structures) draw inspiration from the materials, finishes, and assembly of the surrounding built environment. Unique differences in sign families indicate various use districts, aligning the sign systems with the architecture and providing distinct accents within a unified community.

Pattern art in each district serves as a visual tool to distinguish between districts and is also utilized within them. The scale, style, density, and granularity of the pattern art are deliberately similar, ensuring that the use of patterns, varied as they are, also serves as a unique unifying element for the entire community. All patterns are viewed as both natural and scientific in appearance.
